Laura Garton

Representing the Town of Cobourg, Laura Garton began serving the Northumberland CFDC Board of Directors in 2012. Laura has an Hon.B.Sc., from the University of Ottawa, and an M.A. in Organizational Sociology from the University of Toronto. In 1997 while working on her Ph.D. she decided to pursue a career in the corporate world and joined Nortel Networks.

In recent years she has worked as the Director of Workforce Research and Strategy for Nortel Networks and provided research and consultancy services to clients as the Founder and Principle of Garton & Associates. As the Director of Human Resource Management Research for the Conference Board of Canada and most recently the acting Director of Strategic Planning and Policy Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation, Laura has led teams of professionals to provide custom research and support to executives in the areas of policy, innovation systems and strategic human resource management.

She is known as an experienced leader with demonstrated expertise in designing evidence based strategies to improve performance. Laura has implemented these skills and achieved success as a Community Services Program Manager in the City of Cambridge and a Community Organizer in North York. Laura’s creative mind coupled with years of business experience make her a great asset to the strengthening of the economic capacity of Northumberland County.
