Northumberland CFDC’s Scientists and Engineers in Business (SEB) initiative in Northumberland County was mentioned in a feature article by Wallace Immen in today’s edition of The Globe & Mail: Small Ontario county lures Silicon Valley startup. The article examines the transition from urban to rural for hi-tech start-ups in Prince Edward County and Eastern Ontario, and emphasizes funding and entrepreneurial skills training opportunities through innovative Community Futures and FedDev Ontario initiatives.

Ontario Self-Employment Benefit (OSEB) Business Counselor Susan Marshall recently completed a course in “Fundamentals of Web Marketing” through the University of Toronto’s continuing education program and will be pursuing training in e-commerce next year. Northumberland CFDC also piloted a module on social media for small business in Cobourg with current business planning course participants. These efforts reflect a commitment to developing online and web-based pathways for small business development and marketing in the digital age.

About the OSEB Program

The primary objective of this innovative Employment Ontario program is to assist new entrepreneurs in creating jobs for themselves, and potentially others, through self-employment. Participants in the Ontario Self-Employment Benefit (OSEB) program receive income support, business plan writing assistance, and ongoing counseling over a 42-week period. Read more.

New Entrepreneurs to Participate in Queen’s University Doctoral Research on Entrepreneurial Motivation

Ingrid Chadwick, a Ph.D. candidate at Queen’s University School of Business, in Kingston, Ontario, will be conducting surveys of OSEB program participants in Northumberland and Peterborough this month. Ms. Chadwick’s study will examine how entrepreneurs can find ways to continually grow and improve despite the numerous challenges they face during the start-up phase of their business.

Northumberland CFDC curlers were pleased to participate in the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce Funspiel yesterday, with other area businesses, organizations and municipalities. An annual tradition, “the Chamber Funspiel combines networking with exercise and competition.”

The Northumberland CFDC held a Social Media for Small Business Seminar at IDEAHUB on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012. IDEAHUB is the Municipality of Port Hope’s business incubator. Participants and graduates of the Ontario Self-Employment Benefit (OSEB) Program took part in the two-hour seminar.

The social media for small business workshop was led by Darren Catherwood (back row, second from right) of Me2You Media. Darren recently launched Me2You Media through the Ontario Self-Employment Benefit Program.
